Starbucks Malaysia reveals its initiative to launch a sign language store on the island of Borneo. This cutting-edge approach promotes inclusive employment for deaf and hard-of-hearing citizens.
The new sign language-enabled Starbucks store is at the Vivacity Megamall, Kuching City. It targets the local community, especially those who use sign language to communicate.
This is the third Starbucks Signing Store with sign language to be introduced in Malaysia. Starbucks Signing Store started in 2016 intending to create jobs and support development for deaf people.
"Creating a space that actually encourages diversity and strengthens the deaf and hard of hearing community has always been an important path for us," said Dato' Sydney Quais, CEO of Berjaya Food Berhad and Managing Director of Starbucks Malaysia & Brunei.
Starbucks Malaysia has partnered with the Sawarak Deaf Society by providing professional interpreters for Malaysian Sign Language and hosting various activities for the local community.
There are currently 20 Starbucks sign language stores worldwide, located in China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and the United States.
