Retail units interconnected by walkways which enable visitors to walk from unit to unit are commonly known as malls. In the United States strip malls have developped since the 20th of last century.

According Forbes in November 2007 the largest malls in the world are:

• South China Mall, Donguan, China

• Golden Resources Shopping Mall, Beijing, China

• Mall of Asia, Pasay City, Phillipines

• Cevahir Istanbul, Istanbul, Turkey

• West Edmonton Mall, Edmonton, Canada

• Megamall, Mandaluyong City, Philippines

• Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

• Beijing Mall, Beijing, China

• Zhengjia Plaza, Guangzhou, China

• City North Edsa, Quezon City, Philippines

Four of the ten largest malls are located in China.  Three of the ten largest malls are in the Phillipines. Only one is outside of Asia. 

The Dubai Mall will be completed in the second half of 2008. It claims to be the largest mall in the world. Just a few month later, the Mall of Arabia will open in Dubai, and claims to be the largest mall in the world by then.
