Target stores founded in 1902 by George Draper Dayton. A native New Yorker, Dayton decided to test the Midwest market for dry goods. With a background in banking and real estate, Dayton purchased land in Minneapolis and started Dayton Dry Goods Company. Today, it is Target Corporation. Dayton quickly established a reputation for dependable merchandise, fair business practices and a generous spirit of giving. His son and grandsons took over leadership after his death and begin to grow the Dayton Company into a national retailer.
