Marks & Spencer is one of the major retailers of clothing, home products, and luxury food products in the United Kingdom. Marks & Spencer was founded by Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer back in 1884 in Leeds, the company’s headquarters is based in the City of Westminster. Marks & Spencer was the first British retailer to make a pre-tax profit of more than £1 billion, in 1998.
What started off as a partnership between Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer was soon to become an international brand with outlets in various countries and cities around the world. In 1884, Michael Marks met Isaac Dewhirst who went on to led Marks £5. Marks used this money to start his Penny Bazaar on Kirkgate Market in Leeds, after acquiring a permanent stall in the market, Marks invited Thomas Spencer, Dewhirst’s cashier to become his partner. This partnership created which went on to become the famous Marks & Spencer brand.
