Booths is a British chain of supermarkets with most of its branches located in Lancashire. Booths have developed a motto “to sell the best quality goods in shops staffed by first class assistants,” and it seeks to compete not just on price but quality as well. E.H. Booth & Co. Ltd was founded when Edwin Henry Booth opened a shop called The China House in Blackpool in 1847. Edwin Henry Booth was only 19 years old at that time. In 1863, he began selling wines and spirits and opened other branches in Lytham in 1879, and in Blackburn in 1884. The business was listed as a private limited company in 1896. In 1902, Edwin’s son, John introduced cafes into the stores and all Booths stores had its café. He also invited all the staff to become shareholders of the business in 1920, and the company has remained in the ownership of the Booth family and staff ever since. The company has over 250 shareholders, with each shareholder holding having just 12% of the total shares. Currently, Edwin J. Booth is the chairman of the business and is the fifth generation of the Booth family managing the business.
From its humble beginning with just one store, today Booths has 29 stores in the United Kingdom, with most of its stores located in Lancashire. Cumbria, Yorkshire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester are the other places where Booth supermarkets are located. Booths currently have over 3,000 employees. With one simple aim, to sell only the best goods in his shop, Edwin Henry Booth has built up a business that today sells high-quality products, and this has become the pride of the business.
