On October 30, 2008, Westfield London started its promising journey with a five-story building providing a retailing area of 150,000 m2 (1,614,600 ft2). This dynamic and innovative place has provided 80% of shops specializing in fashion. Remarkably, traders from at least 15 countries are continuously delivering their best products and services.
Apple, Bershka, Boots, Bose, Jaeger, Kurt Geiger, and other more than 265 fashion-focused and premium retailers are housed in this luxurious environment. It has five anchor tenants. The newly developed area, namely the Village, is a high-end retailing area. The area includes brands Burberry, De Beers, Dior, Gucci, Miu Miu, Mulberry, Myla, and Versace.
Delicious food items from around the world are another iconic feature of this shopping mall. A cluster of 17 exotic restaurants spread across the Westfield. At least 25 styles from different nationalities have made this hub appealing to food enthusiasts. Among them, six are new in the United Kingdom, and five are the newest brands. Around 50 concepts of food have been the winners of around 73 different awards.
Westfield London has not stopped just showing their excellent remarks on shopping and food. Rather, their entertaining arrangement for the shopping-tired visitors is quite promising. The multiplex cinema Vue provides a capacity of around 3,000 seats. It is a 14-screen movie hall, including five 3D screens. Moreover, a gym, a spa, and a library have added new tastes to the people visiting the place.
The UK’s transport infrastructure has significantly enhanced this area. Every five minutes, the adjacent four rail stations provide a tube coming towards and going away from this area. On average, one bus every minute reaches two highly busy bus stations. However, this does not provide a comprehensive overview of the transportation options available at this shopping mall. A car park providing 4,500 spaces allows a huge number of visitors to come from far away in the city. Any consumer for his quick shopping can also come here by his cycle using the new cycle routes. Reportedly, the space for cycling is unsatisfactorily inadequate. In addition to that, a secure pedestrian route allows a huge number of visitors to come here walking.
Such a lovely place, however, cannot satisfy the thirst of the architects. This failure has brought an unfortunate moment for this building. The Cup is awarded every year to the ugliest buildings in the United Kingdom. In 2009, the unfortunate winner was this building. Some tree-looking columns supported its unsteady roof over an enormous central lobby. One of the mentionable designs is the living wall situated at Southern Terrace. It is 170 meters long and four meters tall. It stands between the commercial center and local homes, providing a heartening, fascinating, and vibrant location for outdoor cafés and restaurants.
Although, indeed, this lovely place is not satisfactory at the scale of architecture, the exciting experience of millions of people every year shows that its attractiveness lies in the comfortable environment, availability of top-class products, and arrangements of fun elements.
