About this mall
Northlake Mall is an enclosed shopping center that is located eight miles (13 km) north of center city Charlotte, North Carolina. It is located off of Interstate 77 at exit 18, West W.T. Harris Blvd.
In 2005, when Northlake Mall opened, it filled a void for the lack of retail in the northern portion of Mecklenburg County. A mall had been planned for this region for years, but plans never materialized until a few years prior to the mall’s opening. It has become the dominant retail destination for the thriving communities in North Charlotte and the Lake Norman region, where it gets its name from.
The mall has anchor stores Belk, Dillard’s, and Macy’s. Additionally, two junior anchor stores which are Dick’s Sporting Goods and Borders Books and Music. There is still one anchor pad available on the back side of the mall for a future store. Also anchoring the mall, although not yet accessible from the inside of the mall, is an AMC Theatres.
It has been said that the opening of Northlake Mall sealed the deal for the departure of many mainstay stores at Eastland Mall, across town. Within a few years of Northlake’s opening, the Belk and Dillard’s stores at Eastland have departed, as have the Limited Brands stores, which have locations at Northlake. Other rivals in the Charlotte region include the upscale SouthPark and the more mid-market Carolina Place Mall in Pineville.
