Manhattan Mall, an indoor shopping mall in New York City, is located on 33rd Street and Sixth Avenue. It is one of the few malls in the city that does not offer off-street parking for shoppers.
This mall is a popular shopping destination, with A&S and Sterns as major businesses. The current primary anchor store is JC Penney. Venture purchased the building in 1999 for $135 million and sold it to Vornado Realty Trust in 2006 for $689 million. The second basement level includes entrances to the 34th Street-Hearn Square New York City Subway station (B D F M N Q R lines) and the 33rd Street PATH station (HOB-33rd, JSQ-33rd, and JSQ-33rd via HOB trains).
The mall is housed in the high-rise building that was previously home to Gimbels’ flagship store, which closed in 1986. After a refurbishment, it reopened as A&S Plaza in 1989. It was originally 13 stories tall, but the mall failed financially due to restricted access to the higher floors. Except for the first and second floors, as well as the two basement levels, all floors were converted to office space shortly after Stern’s closure. JCPenney announced on April 18, 2007, that it would open a 150,000-square-foot (14,000 m2) store at the mall, its first in Manhattan. Retailers and the food court were shuttered to make way for the new store, as was the direct underground entrance to the New York City Subway and PATH. The store debuted on July 31, 2009.
In addition to shopping and dining, the Manhattan Mall provides a variety of entertainment alternatives for guests, including a movie theater and a virtual reality experience center. There is also a fitness center inside the mall.
