About this mall
Har Mar Mall is a regional, enclosed shopping mall located in the city of Roseville, Minnesota, a suburb of Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States. Built in 1961 and expanded several times since, it is one of two malls serving Roseville (the other being Rosedale Center). As of 2008, Har Mar Mall is composed largely of big box retail, including HomeGoods, Marshalls, Cub Foods, Staples, Barnes & Noble and Michaels for anchors.
Har Mar Mall was built in 1961, as Harold J Slawik had a vision to build a “super mall” which included a number of larger department as well as smaller stores. At the time in 1961 very few “super malls” had been built in the midwest. Deriving its name from its owners, Harold J Slawik and his wife Marie Slawik. Har Mar is a combination of the two names. Harold and Marie. Slawik went on to build a number of other commercial outlets, and the name Har Mar Inc is still in use today by the Slawik family.Twin Cities architect Willard Thorson, who also designed Apache Plaza in nearby St. Anthony, designed the mall. In 1971, the mall was expanded. The mall got another renovation after being heavily damaged by a tornado on 14 June 1981.
Until the mid-1990s, Har Mar was in serious decline, losing stores and foot traffic. However, it has since become viable once more, gaining new tenants such as Barnes & Noble, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Dress Barn. The mall’s two movie theater complexes closed in late 2006, as new theaters opened at nearby Rosedale Center. Staples renovated the space and opened a store in 2008.
