The mall opened in 1968, at that time it was anchored by the department stores Simpson’s and Eaton’s, the supermarkets Steinberg and Dominion, and a movie theater Famous Players.
The mall was expanded in 1976 to make room for an additional wing including the arrival of the current Sears. Part of this expansion happened on the space of the former Famous Player movie theater that had closed and been demolished the year before. Thus far, this is the only expansion the mall has had in its history.
Galeries d’Anjou was the largest mall on the island of Montreal for 17 years before being surpassed by Fairview Pointe-Claire in 1985 and Place Versailles in the late 1980s. Despite this, it remains one of largest malls in Greater Montreal.
