Yum China Holdings Inc. has announced opening of the 500th KFC restaurant in Shanghai. The first Chinese city to reach such an impressive mark in the fried chicken seller’s portfolio. The KFC brand entered the Shanghai market in 1989, opening its first restaurant in Dongfeng Hotel on Bund.
“We are thrilled to reach this remarkable milestone in Shanghai, which is not only China’s largest consumer market, but also home to Yum China’s operating headquarters,” said Joey Wat, chief executive officer of Yum China.
The new restaurant, which opened in the Shanghai Library building, has a separate reading area with a special selection of books. It will also host various book events as part of the KFC Book Kingdom program.
KFC’s 500th restaurant is also partnering with the Disabled Persons Federation to create an inclusive and supportive environment for people with special needs. The menu includes Braille and sign language options and light and sound reminders for employees.
As of the second quarter of 2023, Yum China Holdings Inc. has more than 9,200 KFC restaurants under management with locations in 1,800 cities in China.
