Charles R Walgreen Sr founded the company in 1902 in Chicago, Illinois when he purchased the pharmacy where he was employed as a pharmacist. The stores were originally connected to grocery stores. Walgreens is currently headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois.
Currently, Walgreens is the largest drugstore retailer in the United States, with 8678 stores in operation in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Guam. The Walgreens Company operates the online stores Beauty.com, Visiondirect.com, and Drugstore.com along with worksite health centers, mail service pharmacies, and home care facilities.
Walgreens employees 240,000 people with each store operating under its management team which includes a store manager, an executive assistant manager, and at least one assistant manager. Every storefront carries over 18,000 products and has an in-house pharmacy. Walgreens had over 72.2 billion dollars in sales and showed a profit of 2.45 billion dollars in profit for 2013 an increase in revenue of 15.2%.
