NRF’s methodology uses a system in which points are awarded to retailers based on international revenues, franchise and alliance participation outside their local region, and their ability to sell online. Both public and private companies were considered. To be considered at all, a company must be retailing and have direct sales in at least three countries. And if a franchise is used, the name of the outlets must remain the same in the different countries.

Walmart has once again led the NRF (National Retail Federation) Top 50 Global Retailers rating among the largest companies in the retail market. At the same time, Amazon retained its status as the company with the largest market capitalization, while China’s Alibaba Group remained the leader in online sales.

There were some changes in the ranking for 2019: the leader of the Chinese market, Alibaba, moved up three lines and took the fourth position. And the permanent participant of the rating Tesco, which has recently been under pressure, left the top ten for the first time. According to the results of the year, 9 out of 50 retailers, including French Carrefour and Leclerc, lost their rating points.

Third place in the table of ranks, following Walmart and Amazon, was taken by the German Schwartz Group, which operates the retail chains Lidl and Kaufland in 30 countries. Alibaba and one of the leaders of the American market, Costco, closed the top five. The NRF’s top 10 also included the Netherlands-based multi-format retailer Ahold Delhaize, Carrefour, and the German discounter network Aldi. The top ten retailers are IKEA and Auchan.
