Amazon has decided to simplify the cashless payment system in its stores and abandon tracking cameras for customers. The online giant’s employees have developed a new version of this system, opting to forego the complex network of intelligent cameras that significantly burden store employees and suppliers.
Each item will be assigned an RFID tag, automatically scanned when a shopper exits the store. The company tested this system at a sports arena in its hometown of Seattle. Shoppers could freely enter the store, choose their desired items, and exit through a turnstile equipped with an RFID tag scanner.
For payment, customers used either a credit card or waved their hand over the Amazon One hand scanner. In this way, Amazon hopes that its Just Walk Out technology will become more accessible (and cost-effective) for a broader range of retail sellers without needing a complex camera system.
Amazon may be phasing out physical retail stores, but it clearly continues to invest in solving the logistics challenges of real-world shopping. As of the third quarter of 2023, more than 150 stores have Walk Out technology.
