Amazon is experimenting with a new small-format grocery store in Chicago, called Amazon Grocery, designed for quick trips and grab-and-go convenience. This new concept operates within the same building as a Whole Foods Market, though it remains a separate entity. Smaller footprint, curated selection The Amazon Grocery store focuses on filling in smaller shopping needs, such as coffee, ready-to-eat meals, and top-up grocery items, helping shoppers avoid the need for multiple trips to different stores. The space spans 3,800 square feet and offers 3,500 products — nearly one-third the size of Whole Foods’ Daily Shop in Manhattan. Notably, this location does not include Amazon’s signature Just Walk Out technology for cashierless checkouts. Despite this test store launch, Amazon stated it has no current plans to expand the concept. Growing grocery operations in 2024 In 2024, Amazon has been actively building its grocery presence through various initiatives. These include expanding its Amazon Fresh stores, launching new private label products, and introducing two new subscription plans. Additionally, the retailer streamlined shopping across its platforms, integrating offerings from Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods. Earlier this month, Amazon revamped 26 of its Amazon Fresh fulfillment centers, adding a broader range of products from both its Fresh and Whole Foods brands.
